Scar care after Mohs and skin surgery

Skin cancer surgery and excisions often leave scars on the face, scalp, hands or chest — sun-exposed places where scar care and sun protection belong together.

  • Often on exposed skin
  • Sheets, dots or SPF gel

Types of repair

  1. Straight-line closure

Where: The wound is stitched into a line

Formats to ask about: Strips (1″ × 6″ is listed for dermatologic surgery), or gel on the face.

  2. Flap or graft

Where: Nearby skin is moved, or skin is taken from another site

Formats to ask about: A 5″ × 6″ sheet can be cut to cover wider or irregular areas, including graft donor sites; gel for curved facial areas.

  3. Small excision or biopsy

Where: A small round or short scar

Formats to discuss with your surgeon

Sun protection and skin surgery

Why sun matters for a new scar

New scars can darken with sun exposure. Many skin-surgery patients also need ongoing sun protection for their skin overall — ask your dermatologist what they recommend.

SPF gel versus regular sunscreen

Silagen’s SPF gel covers the scar itself. Follow its Drug Facts for reapplication, and protect surrounding skin as your dermatologist advises.

Hats, clothing and timing

Physical cover and avoiding peak sun hours help. Ask when the scar can be exposed at all.

  • When will the site be closed enough for scar care?
  • Should I use SPF gel, a sheet, or both at different times?
  • How should I protect the scar and surrounding skin from sun?
  • When is my next skin check?
