How sheeting differs from gel

Silicone sheeting sits directly on the scar. Silagen explains that it combines occlusion, hydration, a slight rise in skin temperature and continuous light pressure — the pressure element is what a gel cannot provide.

Sheets are best on flatter areas where they can stay put: chest, abdomen, back, arms and legs. They are removed for showering and exercise, washed every few days, and reused until they no longer stick.

Silagen lists a choice of backing colors. Ask your surgeon whether a particular color or shape matters for your scar.

Putting a sheet on

  1. Prepare the skin

Wash and dry the area every time. No creams, lotions, ointments, perfume — or silicone gel — underneath, or the sheet loses its stick.

  2. Trim to fit

Cut the piece so it extends at least ½ inch (1 cm) beyond the scar on all sides.

  3. Peel and place

Remove the release liner and lay the sheet adhesive-side down. Medical tape, a pressure garment or sleeve can hold it if needed.

  4. Check and rest the skin

Remove it about every 12 hours to inspect, wash and fully dry the scar. Take it off for showers, baths, swimming and exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cut a strip or sheet?

Yes. Silagen says pieces can be cut to fit — leave about ½ inch beyond the scar on every side.

Source: Silagen frequently asked questions (opens in a new tab)

Why has my sheet stopped sticking?

Usually skin oils, lotion or gel underneath, or the piece needs washing. Wash with water and mild soap (or the Silagen foaming cleanser) and air-dry. Replace it when washing no longer restores the stick.

Source: Silagen Sheeting instructions for use (opens in a new tab)

Do I keep it on in the shower?

No. Silagen advises removing sheeting for showers, baths, swimming and exercise; it also prolongs the life of the piece.

Source: Silagen frequently asked questions (opens in a new tab)

Can I put medicine or moisturizer under it?

No — nothing should go under the sheet. Ask your surgeon how to fit any prescribed ointment around your scar-care routine.

Source: Silagen frequently asked questions (opens in a new tab)

How long does one piece last?

With gentle handling, about 3–4 weeks. Unused pieces kept in their packaging remain usable for several years, according to Silagen.

Which breast shape do I need?

It depends on your incision pattern — around the areola, lollipop or anchor. Your surgeon is the right person to confirm; the breast lift and reduction guide explains each pattern.
