Scar care after breast augmentation
Augmentation incisions are usually short and placed to hide — in the breast crease, at the edge of the areola or in the armpit. Your surgeon can explain which format options fit each location.
- Short, hidden incisions
- Strips, circles or gel
- Formats to discuss with your surgeon

Common incision locations
Your surgeon chooses the approach. Where the scar sits shapes which product is practical.
Inframammary (breast crease)
Where: A short line in the fold beneath the breast
Formats to ask about: Silagen lists 1″ × 3″ and 1″ × 6″ strips for augmentation scars in the crease; gel is an alternative.
Periareolar
Where: Along the lower edge of the areola
Formats to ask about: Areola circle shapes have a nipple opening for incisions around the areola; gel suits the curved edge.
Transaxillary (armpit)
Where: In a natural crease of the armpit
Formats to ask about: A moving, sweaty area — ask whether gel or a small strip with tape is more realistic.

Formats to discuss with your surgeon

Short strips
1″ × 3″ strips for scars up to 2″, or 1″ × 6″ for up to 4″. Ask your surgeon whether a strip suits your incision and bra.
Open guideAreola circles
Pre-shaped rings for incisions around the areola, sold in pairs.

Pure gel
A thin layer for curved or armpit incisions where a sheet may not stay put.
Open guidePractical considerations
Wearing a strip with a surgical or support bra
A strip can sit under a soft bra once your surgeon allows it. Make sure the band does not roll the edge of the strip; trimming corners round can help it stay flat.
Armpit incisions and deodorant
Nothing should go under a sheet, and deodorant can stop a strip sticking. Ask your surgeon when you can use deodorant and which product suits the area.
Both sides at once
You will usually treat both incisions. Strips come several to a box; gel covers both with very little product.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Where will my incision be, and how long will it be?
- When can I start scar care — and how will you confirm the incision is closed?
- Would you suggest strips, an areola shape or gel for my incision?
- Can I wear a strip under my surgical bra?
- How long should I continue, and when will you check the scar?
- Is there anything about implants or drains that changes this plan?
Frequently asked questions
Which strip size fits an augmentation scar?
Silagen lists 1″ × 3″ strips for scars up to 2″ and 1″ × 6″ for up to 4″, both suggested for augmentation. Your surgeon can confirm.

Can I use gel instead of strips?
Often, yes — the thyroid and mastectomy guides list gel as an option where preferred. Ask which suits your incision.

Will a strip affect my implant?
Strips sit on the skin surface only. Ask your surgeon about any pressure or massage instructions specific to your implant.
