Face & neck procedure education
Neck liposuction removes fat from under the chin and along the upper neck through small incisions, using a thin tube called a cannula. It suits fullness that remains despite stable weight, and how well the skin tightens afterward often decides whether liposuction alone fits.
What does it change?
The amount of fat under the chin.
It does not remove loose skin.
Is it enough on its own?
Only when skin can tighten well.
Loose skin may need a neck lift.
How much time should I plan?
Often a week or two before most daily routines.
Final contour takes months.
01 · Overview
Fullness under the chin—sometimes called a double chin—can come from fat, loose skin, the neck muscle (platysma), chin and jaw shape, or a mix. Genetics, aging and weight change all play a part.
Liposuction addresses only the fat layer. After numbing fluid is placed, the surgeon moves a cannula through small incisions to loosen and suction fat, then relies on the skin to settle against the new contour. [2]
During the exam they pinch and lift the tissue under the chin, watch the neck as you move, and look at your jaw and chin shape. Fat that can be grasped beneath reasonably firm skin suits liposuction; skin that hangs or folds, or visible vertical bands, point toward a procedure that also tightens skin or muscle.
02 · Concerns & Goals
These concerns can look alike in a mirror but involve different tissues, which is why assessment matters.
A soft area below the jawline that persists despite stable weight.
The line between chin and neck looks less defined in profile.
Skin that folds or hangs; this usually needs more than liposuction.
Visible cords from the neck muscle, which liposuction does not change.
03 · Options
The right approach depends on which tissue creates the fullness. These four are discussed most often, and a surgeon may combine them.

Removes fat through small incisions.
Focused on the chin and upper neck.
Addresses the whole neck.
A nonsurgical, prescription injectable.
Options and their scope are described by Cleveland Clinic [1] [3].
Liposuction is often part of a chin tuck or neck lift, where it removes fat while the other steps manage skin and muscle. It can also be paired with chin augmentation when a smaller chin contributes to a soft jawline. Combining procedures changes the anesthesia, incisions and recovery, so plan around the larger operation.
04 · Results
A smoother area under the chin and a clearer jawline.
Loose skin, muscle bands and the shape of the chin and jaw.
Contour becomes clearer as swelling settles over several months.
Results are long-lasting when weight stays stable, but no result is guaranteed and a second procedure is sometimes needed. [2]
05 · Recovery
Recovery focuses on swelling, support for the treated skin and limiting neck strain while incisions heal.
Anesthesia, a procedure of about an hour or more, a supportive chin strap or garment, and home with someone who stays the first night.
Discomfort, swelling, bruising and tightness are expected; any small drain is usually removed after a few days.
These effects usually ease, and many people return to work and daily routines.
Remaining swelling settles and incisions continue to heal and fade.

Gentle compression supports the skin as it settles onto the new contour and helps limit swelling. How long to wear it varies by surgeon and technique.
A neck lift involves longer incisions around the ears and muscle tightening, so recovery is longer than after liposuction alone. A chin tuck usually falls between the two.
06 · Safety
Discomfort, swelling, bruising and a tight feeling are expected effects in the first two weeks. The risks below are less predictable and need assessment.
Dents, rippling, unevenness or loose-looking skin may appear and can need revision.
Numbness, weakness or altered skin sensation can occur and may persist.
A collection of blood under the skin may need draining; infection needs prompt treatment.
Anesthesia reactions, slow-healing incisions, scarring or skin discoloration.
Risks drawn from Cleveland Clinic and ASPS [1] [2].
07 · Costs
The total depends mainly on whether liposuction is done alone or with a chin tuck or neck lift, and on anesthesia and setting.
The surgeon’s professional work, which grows with combined procedures.
What to clarifyAre follow-up visits and any revision policy included?
Local numbing with sedation in an office, or general anesthesia in a surgical center or hospital.
What to clarifyWhich anesthesia and facility apply to my plan?
Chin strap or compression garment, dressings and prescribed medication.
What to clarifyWhich items are in the quote and which are separate?
A TRC Care Planner helps organize your priorities, surgeon preferences, consultation questions and estimate comparisons for a defined fixed fee.
What to clarifyIs this in my estimate or charged separately?
Cosmetic neck procedures are usually not covered by insurance. Ask how deposits, cancellation and complication-related care are handled. [1]
08 · Questions
Results are long-lasting for most people who keep a stable weight. Weight gain can still enlarge remaining fat in the area.
Skin with good elasticity usually settles well. Skin that is thin, loose or creased may not, which is why some people need a chin tuck or neck lift instead.
Liposuction uses small incisions placed where they are less noticeable. Ask your surgeon where they would place yours and how they usually heal.
You are numbed or asleep during the procedure. Afterward, soreness, tightness and swelling are common and are managed with the medication your team advises.
Liposuction removes fat in one procedure; injections reduce it gradually over several office sessions. Neither tightens significant loose skin.
No. Vertical bands come from the neck muscle and are addressed with a neck lift or other muscle-focused treatment.
Early change shows within weeks, but the final contour can take several months as swelling resolves.
Yes. Fullness under the chin is common in both men and women; assessment focuses on the tissue itself.
