Costs & Payment Planning

Before You Apply

Understand your financing options, compare costs, and know what to expect before making a decision.

A little preparation makes any financing application smoother. This checklist walks through what to know and gather before you apply with any lender — and what to confirm along the way.

Know Your Numbers First

  • Your full estimate

Your full estimate — surgeon fee plus facility, anesthesia, supplies and any optional care, so the amount you request is not short.

  • Your monthly budget

The monthly payment you can comfortably afford, with breathing room.

  • Your upfront amount

How much, if anything, you plan to pay upfront.

  • Your timeline

Your timeline — when the procedure is expected and when payment would begin.

Review Your Starting Point

Before applying, it helps to know where you stand: review your credit report so there are no surprises, and think through your existing monthly obligations. You are entitled to request your credit report from each of the major credit bureaus. If something looks wrong, you can dispute it with the bureau before you apply.

Documents Lenders Often Ask For

Identification

Government-issued photo ID and address confirmation.

Income details

Recent pay stubs, tax returns or benefit letters, depending on the lender.

Procedure estimate

Some medical lenders ask for the estimate or invoice showing what the funds will pay for.

Questions Worth Asking Any Lender

  • What is the APR, and is it fixed or variable?
  • Are there origination, application, late or prepayment fees?
  • What is the total repayment over the full term?
  • Does checking my options affect my credit, and when is a full credit check run?
  • What charges can the funds cover — procedure, facility, anesthesia, recovery care?
  • When do payments begin, and can the term be changed later if needed?

You can practice reviewing ranges and estimated illustrations in the TRC Finance Center — no application is involved. Individual rates apply, and lenders make the final decision.

Questions About Applying

That is a personal decision. Multiple applications in a short window can affect your credit, and processes differ by lender — many people compare published ranges first, then choose where to apply. Ask each lender how applications are treated.
